Welcome to Kavli UK

The UK was one of the early export markets for Kavli and its Primula Cheese brand was first sold in the UK in 1929. It soon became established as a popular favourite and as volumes grew, Kavli began to look for a UK manufacturing base. Our first UK factory was opened in 1936 near to Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the North East coast of England and under the leadership of Knut Kavli, the UK business was established.

In 1961 Kavli moved into a purpose built site on the Team Valley in Gateshead. Over the years the site has been expanded and modernised creating a facility that is approved to the stringent BRC quality standards for food hygiene and manufacture.

In 1997 Kavli Limited acquired the Castle MacLellan pâté business located in Kirkcudbright in South West Scotland. This business has been integrated into the UK operation in a manner which retains its identity and allows us to maintain the special links with Scottish sourced ingredients which has played an important role in the company’s success over the years.

Kavli UK currently has 190 employees across its two sites and makes a range of food products including cheese spreads and snacks, ambient dips under the Primula brand and chilled pâté under the Castle MacLellan brand. We also manufacture a range of private label products for UK supermarkets.

Current volumes are in the region of 3100 tonnes of cheese and dips and 1200 tonnes of pâté, with national distribution to all major UK supermarkets, wholesalers and convenience store chains along with exports to Eire, Malta and Greece.
