The timeline 

  • 1872 – Olav Kavli, a farmer's son, born at Bolsøy near Molde.

  • 1893 – Olav Kavli establishes his cheese retail business in Bergen.

  • 1924 – Olav Kavli develops "Primula", the world's first cheese spread. Cheese spread remains one of the Kavli Group's main products.

  • 1924 – In the same year that Olav develops ”Primula”, his son Knut Kavli enters the business as an equal partner.

  • 1933 – Kavli establishes sales operations in Sweden and begins exporting to other countries. Olav Kavli is awarded the King's Medal of Merit for his innovative work.

  • 1935 – Kavli establishes operations in Denmark.

  • 1936 – Kavli establishes operations in the UK.

  • 1938 – Kavli launches what is to become its best-seller: Cheese spread with bacon in a tube.

  • 1940 – O. Kavli AB established in Sweden

  • 1962 – The Kavli Trust is established and all O. Kavli AS stocks are transferred to the Trust.

  • 1984 – Kavli buys Vestfold Flatbrødfabrikk AS at Barkåker in Tønsberg. The factory is also known by the name of Korni.

  • 1993 – Kavli buys Nutana A/S in Denmark

  • 1994 – Kavli adopts a holding structure. All daughter companies come under Kavli Holding AS.

  • 1997 – Kavli buys Castle MacLellan Ltd. in Scotland

  • 2000 - Kavli establishes Kavli OY in Finland

  • 1997-2000 – Kavli establishes Q-Meieriene A/S

  • 2001 – Kavli International is established to strengthen Kavli's export to markets where the group has no daughter companies.

  • 2002 – Kavli sells Nutana A/S in Danmark

  • 2003 – Kavli buys Blomberg Gløgg in Danmark

  • 2008 – Kavli buys the drink concentrate producer Pebas AS in Ringkøbing, Denmark.

  • 2009 – Kavli buys the chocolate spread HaPå, a brand full of traditions in Norway

  • 2009 – The Kavli Group's turnover totals NOK1.9 billion.
